Which Niagara Falls boat tour gets you closest to the water?
Both of them, and that is the honest answer people rarely get. The boats sail from opposite banks of the same gorge and finish in the same place, the churn at the foot of Horseshoe Falls. What actually differs is the price, the currency, the queue, the walk to the dock, and which country's paperwork you need in your pocket.
If you are already standing in Niagara Falls State Park with a Cave of the Winds ticket, ride the American boat and stop agonising. If you are on Clifton Hill looking at the Horseshoe crestline, ride the Canadian one. Notice what the table does not say. It does not say one boat gets closer, because they do not, and any page that ranks them on proximity is guessing. The Canadian boat is bigger and its landing sits nearer the Horseshoe crestline, so the approach feels longer. The American boat passes the American Falls broadside on the way out, which the Canadian boat sees from further off. Those are differences of choreography, not of access.

Two adults on the Canadian side pay CA$95.90 and then meet Niagara Parks' own parking rates. Doing both in one day adds a border crossing and its toll on top.

This is the fact that ruins more Niagara itineraries than any other. The boats do not run in winter. Not reduced, not weather-dependent: docked. Ice moves down the Niagara River and the vessels come out of the water entirely.

The reason is upriver. An ice boom is strung across the outlet of Lake Erie every year around mid-December to stop large ice floes entering the river, and its removal does not begin until early April. In 2026 that removal started on 6 April, which is why the American boat opened on 24 April and not sooner.
If your trip falls between December and March, no tour can put you on a boat, and any listing implying otherwise is selling you a substitution. What the good ones do instead is swap in Journey Behind the Falls, which runs year-round on the Canadian side. The both-sides day tour does exactly that, so a January booking still gets you underneath the water rather than only looking at it.
What twenty minutes at the base of Horseshoe Falls is actually like
The first half is unremarkable. You motor out along the gorge, the American Falls slide past on one side, someone points a phone at a rainbow. It feels like a river cruise with an unusually good backdrop, and a few passengers start wondering what the fuss is.
Then the boat turns into the Horseshoe basin and the world stops being a view. About 2,400 cubic metres of water a second is landing in front of you from 57 metres up. You cannot see the top. You cannot hear the person next to you. The spray does not fall like rain, it arrives sideways in sheets, and the poncho becomes a formality rather than a solution. That part lasts maybe four or five minutes, and it is the entire reason anyone books.

Neither is better as a ride. Both are about twenty minutes and both finish in the Horseshoe Falls basin. Book Maid of the Mist if you are on the American side or want Cave of the Winds the same day, and Niagara City Cruises if you are in Ontario or want Journey Behind the Falls.
