Two that go to the falls. Maid of the Mist sails from Niagara Falls State Park in New York, and Niagara City Cruises runs the Voyage to the Falls from the lower gorge in Ontario. A third product, the Whirlpool jet boats, runs the rapids several miles downstream and does not go near the falls.

Neither is better as a ride. Both are about twenty minutes, both pass the American and Bridal Veil Falls, and both finish in the Horseshoe Falls basin. Ride whichever side you are already on. If you can reach either, the American boat is cheaper and the Canadian side has the better view from land.

Yes. Hornblower Niagara Cruises took the Canadian-side concession in 2014 and the operation was rebranded Niagara City Cruises in 2021. There is only one Canadian boat tour, with two names still in circulation.

Seeing the falls is free on both sides. Niagara Falls State Park has no admission charge and the Ontario promenade is open to walk. Parking, the boats and the paired attractions are what cost money.

No, the fare is the same. What differs is flexibility: Maid of the Mist states that online tickets are valid on any open day, while tickets bought in person are day-specific.

No. Both fleets come out of the water entirely from roughly December through April because of ice on the Niagara River. There is no reduced winter schedule and no weather-dependent chance of sailing.

About twenty minutes on the water for both boats. Budget ninety minutes to two hours in total during summer, because the ticket line, the elevator and boarding routinely take longer than the ride.

The first sailings, around 8:45 to 9am. That single change turns a two-hour visit into about forty-five minutes. Late afternoon is the second-best window.

Loud rather than scary. There is no drop, no speed and no sudden movement. Inside the basin it is noise you feel physically, wind and water for four or five minutes.

Only to cross between the two sides. Each boat boards in its own country, so riding one requires nothing extra if you are already in that country. Crossing the Rainbow Bridge needs a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence, and a pedestrian toll applies.

Not directly; it boards only in New York. Several tours sold as Canadian-side trips include it, which works because the tour crosses the border, and that still requires your own document.

No. You would pay twice for near-identical twenty minutes. Doing both sides is worth it for Cave of the Winds, Journey Behind the Falls and the Canadian view, none of which exist on the other bank.

Yes, in the ordinary sense of a licensed passenger vessel on a short fixed route under regulatory oversight in both countries. The realistic hazards are a wet deck and a dropped phone. Sailings are cancelled for high winds rather than run in marginal conditions.

The service began in 1846, originally as a ferry carrying passengers, mail and cargo across the river rather than as a tour boat. It became a sightseeing operation after a bridge made the ferry redundant.
